Back in Pennsylvania,
Ruth Rodale Spira, ably equipped with a botany degree, joins him in
undertaking a challenge: to create new and unique varieties of Asian
pears. Working with experts in the United States and the Orient, the
Spiras begin their own orchard situated in Eastern Pennsylvania's
fertile Lehigh Valley. Thus, Subarashii Kudamono, which means
"wonderful fruit" in Japanese, was born.
